President’s Message for 2017-2018

It is a great honour for me to take on the role of President of the Rotary Club of Wiarton for  this year. Our club is very active, with a number of major community fund raisers including the Village Fair, Amazing Race, Trivia Night and Maple Magic.

My goals for this year include continuing to strengthen the membership of the club both through attraction of new members and through our new Friends of Rotary Program. As a service club, it is vital that we continue to attract new members, who bring new ideas and energy.

We have completed the first stage of our Canada 150 project, with the installation of three park benches and musical equipment at Bluewater Park. Still to come are interpretive signs along the boardwalk.

Our International President, Ian Riseley, has challenged all clubs to plant one tree for each member. I am thrilled to say that we will be planting trees at the Peninsula Shores District School early next Spring to meet the President’s goal and to provide a wind break for future students attending that school.

The identification of a significant community project is another goal for this term. We are going to be hearing a presentation from the Town in regard to a proposed new Skate Board Park at Bluewater Park. This is a potential new project that our Club could contribute to.

One of my personal interests is international work. “The Hand Up Committee”, which is composed of Rotarians and supporters from area Clubs, is a priority for me and has long been supported by our Club. Hand Up has successfully partnered with Rotary Clubs in Cameroon to provide clean water and other community development projects in the rural areas of the region.. We are partnering on a major project this year that will bring clean water to over 10,000 people in the Mbororo District of Cameroon. This project is made possible through many partnerships including Rotary International Foundation funds and support from our local clubs.

Rotary International has called Rotarians “People of Action, where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change”. I believe that our members exemplify that definition, and The Rotary Club of Wiarton continues to strive for even greater lasting change in our community and the world.
